BHATTIPROLU BUDDHIST STUPA

BHATTIPROLU BUDDHIST STUPA SITUATED IN A SMALL VILLAGE NEAR REPALLE OF GUNTUR DISTRICT. THE EXISTENCE OF THE STUPA HERE WAS FIRST REPORTED BY     MR. BOSWELL IN  1870. LATER ON REFERRED TO BY SIR. WALTER ELLIOT IN 1871 AND ROBERT SEWELL IN 1882 SUBSEQUENTLY BY ALEXANDER REA CONDUCTED A PARTIAL EXCAVATIONS WHICH YIELDED A MAHA CHAITYA AND SOME RELICE CASKET. LATER ON, R.SUBRAHMANYAM EXCAVATED AND BROUGHT TO LIGHT THE OTHER DETAILS OF THE STUPA AND VIHARA COMPLEX. 



THE STUPA HERE IS WHEEL SHAPED SOLID STRUCTURE, BUILD OF BRICK AND COMPRISING A DOME OF 132 FEET DIAMETERS, AND A DRUM OF 148 FEET DIAMETERS WITH A 8 FEET HIGHT WIDE TERRACE AND FOUR AYAKA PILLARS. 





FIVE RELIC CASKETS WERE REPORTED FROM THIS MAHACHAITYA.

THESE RELIC CASKETS ARE NOW PRESERVED IN                                                                               "CHENNAI ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM "    
ACCORDING TO THE INSCRIPTIONS ON THESE RELIC CASKETS "KING KUBHERAKA " WAS RULING THIS AREA WHICH IS CALLED AS "PRATHIPALAPURAM".
AND IT IS ONE OF THE OLDEST BUDDHIST MAHACHAITYA WHERE THE HOLY RELIC OF BUDDHA WAS PRESERVED
